I began to get really interested in gardens when I bought my first home in Bristol - a time when I literally and metaphorically put down roots - and where I designed and planted my first ever garden, It was a lovely walled garden, inspired by the wonderful gardens of Rosemary Verey and Penelope Hobhouse. Traditionally laid out with old flagstones and filled with herbs, perennials and roses, it was a charming, romantic space that I missed greatly when I moved to London.

However, in every sense, it was time to move on, so in my next home, I designed a more contemporary outdoor space. Inspired by Beth Chatto’s stunning garden in Colchester and the naturalistic planting schemes of Dutch garden designer, Piet Oudolf, I created an atmospheric garden full of movement and light, captured throughout the year by the grasses I’d grown to love.

By this time I could no longer ignore my abiding passion for architecture and gardens so I decided to re-train as a garden designer at Capel Manor. It was a truly inspirational time for me and my eyes were opened up to a new way of looking at gardens and how they can transform people’s lives. So with a head full of ideas and a passionate desire to create beautiful gardens that would hopefully touch all my clients’ senses, I set up my garden design practice in South London in 1998. Over the next few years I worked throughout London with a wide range of clients, honing my skills and creating gardens that resonated not only with their desires, but also mine: a desire for simple, honest spaces that work seamlessly with our homes, their interiors and our personal lifestyles ……. where attention to detail is key.

However, in 2006 I decided to leave London and head out to the country. Since then I have been working on gardens in the home counties and the Cotswolds, (plus a few special clients in London), where I’ve been able to fully realise my other passion for naturalistic, contemporary meadow and cottage-style planting that blends effortlessly with the English countryside. Beautiful, atmospheric gardens that touch the soul.
